It also increases the useful life of mining equipment. A problem present in the crushing process is the grinding of metallic elements from the teeth of mechanical mining shovels. For this reason, Cedenna presented a new technological solution to detect the fall of these teeth, avoiding accidents and work stoppages.

Air pollution has become one of the serious health threats that society has learned to normalize, despite its effects on the health and quality of life of millions of people. This was stated by Dr. Juan Escrig Murúa, full professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Santiago and researcher at the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, CEDENNA, in an opinion column published by El Mostrador.

In the text, titled “The Air Our Children Will Inherit”, the academic reflects on the recent critical pollution episodes in Santiago and raises a question that, in his view, should have a more permanent place in public debate: what kind of air future generations will inherit.

“This question does not arise from alarmism. It arises from scientific evidence,” the researcher says, warning that air pollution usually enters public discussion only for a few days, especially when environmental alerts or pre-emergency warnings are declared, only to then be displaced by other urgent issues.

From a scientific perspective, Dr. Escrig explains that an important part of the problem is linked to scale. PM2.5 particles, which are monitored during critical pollution episodes, are about forty times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. Many of the most harmful particles can reach nanometric dimensions, allowing them to pass through the body’s natural defenses, reach the lungs, and even enter the bloodstream.

“Air pollution is, to a large extent, a matter of scale. The most harmful particles are invisible to our eyes, but their effects are profoundly real,” he writes in the column.

In this context, the CEDENNA researcher argues that understanding how these particles move through the atmosphere, how they interact with the body, and how to reduce their impact requires sustained scientific research, technological development, and the training of specialized capacities.

He also highlights that some of the most promising solutions arise precisely at the nanoscale. Nanotechnology makes it possible to develop more precise sensors to monitor pollutants, materials capable of capturing harmful particles, and new energy technologies that could help reduce emissions.

For CEDENNA, this type of reflection reinforces the importance of research in nanoscience and nanotechnology applied to the country’s challenges, especially in areas such as the environment, health, energy, and the development of advanced materials.

Dr. Escrig stresses that improvements in air quality do not happen by chance, but are the result of scientific knowledge, public policy, technological innovation, and collective decisions sustained over time.

“The most important legacy we leave to our children is not only the city we build, but also the air we allow them to breathe,” the academic concludes.

The specialized platform Ciencia en Chile published an article highlighting the recent seminar “Early Diagnosis and Biomarkers: Key Insights from a Parkinson’s Discussion,” an event sponsored by CEDENNA and organized by the University of Santiago de Chile.

The publication underscores the focus of the event, which addressed one of the main current challenges in tackling neurodegenerative diseases: advancing toward earlier and more accurate diagnosis, based on the development of biomarkers and a deeper understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying Parkinson’s disease.

The seminar brought together national and international experts, who discussed topics such as the role of inflammation, the use of biomarkers like alpha-synuclein, and new diagnostic tools aimed at detecting the disease before the onset of clinical symptoms. This is particularly relevant, considering that Parkinson’s is often diagnosed at later stages, when significant neurological damage has already occurred.

In this context, the article also highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the event, which brought together basic and clinical research with the aim of advancing toward concrete solutions for patients.

“Facing the bad news of the PAES” is the title of the Letter to the Editor recently published in El Mercurio, written by Dora Altbir, director of the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CEDENNA) and National Prize for Exact Sciences 2019, together with Miguel Kiwi, researcher at the Center and National Prize for Exact Sciences 2007.

In the text, both prominent scientists analyze the worrying results obtained in the PAES Science test, inviting us to view them not only as a situational warning sign, but as the expression of a structural challenge that requires a long-term perspective and sustained policies over time.

The letter emphasizes the need to strengthen science education from an early age, promoting critical thinking, a deep understanding of natural phenomena, and the link between science, society, and development. Likewise, the authors underscore the irreplaceable role of the State in building an educational system capable of training citizens with the tools to understand an increasingly complex and technologically advanced world.

From this perspective, the text does not limit itself to diagnosing a difficulty, but rather proposes an invitation to transform challenges into opportunities, moving towards a more solid, equitable and inclusive scientific education, aligned with the needs of the country and its future development.

The publication of this letter reinforces CEDENNA's commitment to public debate and to the generation of knowledge that contributes not only to scientific advancement, but also to critical reflection on education, training and public policies in Chile.

The Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CEDENNA) announced the winners of the 2025 CEDENNA Images Contest, a well-established science outreach initiative that aims to bring cutting-edge research in nanoscience and nanotechnology closer to the public through visual language. The awards ceremony was recently featured by the digital media outlet Portal Metropolitano, reinforcing the public impact of this project that combines science, art, and communication.

Following a rigorous evaluation process by a jury of seven researchers, three winning works were selected based on criteria of technical quality, creativity, and contribution to scientific dissemination. The award-winning images reveal structures and phenomena of the nanoworld, generally invisible to the human eye, transforming them into powerful visual pieces capable of arousing wonder and curiosity.

First Place was awarded to “Rock Art,” by Drs. Pedro Chana Cuevas and Patricia Díaz Saldívar; Second Place to “Violet,” by Victoria Flores del Pino and Dr. Patricia Díaz Saldívar; and Third Place to “Heading Towards the Neural Horizon,” by Fabián Araneda Martínez. Each work stands out for its ability to merge scientific rigor with an accessible and evocative visual narrative.

The winning images will be part of the CEDENNA 2026 Wall Calendar, the digital book “Images of the Nanoworld”, available for free download at www.cedenna.cl, and the traveling exhibition “Images of the Nanoworld”, which will tour various regions of Chile throughout 2026, bringing cutting-edge research to educational, cultural and community spaces across the country.

The director of the CEDENNA Center Program, Dr. Juliano Casagrande Denardin, recently published an opinion column on Radio Cooperativa entitled “September: a month for nanotechnology and an opportunity for Chile”, in which he reflects on the role of our country in relation to a discipline that is transforming the present and future of humanity.

In September, nanotechnology conferences multiply in different parts of the world—from Rome and Paris to Dubai and Singapore—bringing together thousands of researchers, academics, and industry representatives. These gatherings address topics as diverse as food security, precision medicine, the energy transition, and climate change mitigation, demonstrating that nanotechnology has become one of the driving forces of contemporary science.

In his column, Dr. Denardin warns that Chile participates in this global scenario, with active research centers and lines of work in areas such as nanosafety, new materials and biomedical applications, but it still needs to take a decisive leap to position itself as international benchmarks.

“The challenge is twofold: to continue producing excellent science and, at the same time, accelerate its translation into public policies, regulatory frameworks, and industrial solutions. Today, Chile lacks a robust national strategy in nanotechnology,” he points out.

The message is clear: nanotechnology is not just science, but also a strategic component of development. To harness its potential in areas such as agriculture, health, and energy, political will, sustained investment, and genuine collaboration between government, academia, and industry are essential.
