CEDENNA researcher Dr. Juan Escrig Murúa published an opinion column on Radio Cooperativa titled “The patience of science: lessons from the 2025 Nobel Prizes”, in which he reflects on the value of basic science and its fundamental role in the development of future technologies.
In his analysis, Dr. Escrig emphasizes that, at a time when Chile is decisively promoting applied science, it is crucial not to lose sight of the importance of research driven by curiosity, deep thinking, and a long-term perspective. This research forms the foundation for advances that, often decades later, end up transforming our lives.
“The technologies that will change our lives in twenty years are probably being developed today, quietly, in some laboratory, where someone driven only by curiosity is making history,” writes Dr. Escrig.
Using the example of the 2025 Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry, the column highlights how discoveries originating from fundamental research—without an immediate application in mind—can become key tools for addressing global challenges such as climate change, technological development, or public health.
