In the framework of a new anniversary of the death of Marie Curie, the outstanding Polish physicist and pioneer in the study of radiation, Dr. Dora Altbir, director of the CEDENNA Foundation and winner of the 2019 National Prize for Exact Sciences, published an opinion column on Radio Cooperativa entitled "Following the example of Marie Curie."
In her text, Dr. Altbir pays tribute to the life and work of Curie, the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize and the only person to win two in different scientific disciplines. Through this historical figure, the researcher reflects on the current challenges that women still face in the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), especially in Chile.
“Marie Curie's story remains a powerful source of inspiration. Her life was a constant invitation to curiosity, study, and the pursuit of knowledge as a tool to overcome fear and uncertainty,” Altbir emphasizes in the column. She also highlights that, although female participation in STEM has increased, significant gaps persist compared to other OECD countries.
In this regard, Dr. Altbir calls for highlighting and celebrating the achievements of women scientists as a way to inspire new generations and advance toward a more inclusive and equitable science.
