It is with deep regret that the Center for the Development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CEDENNA) announces the passing of José d’Albuquerque e Castro (1952–2025), a prominent Brazilian physicist and member of our International Advisory Committee, who passed away on August 12, 2025.

With a bachelor's and master's degree in Physics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and a doctorate in Mathematical Physics from Imperial College, University of London, Professor d'Albuquerque e Castro has dedicated his career to the study of magnetic and transport properties in nanostructured systems.

His close relationship with CEDENNA was evident in numerous visits to Chile, where he witnessed firsthand the work of our laboratories and contributed his strategic vision to consolidate our center as a hub for development in nanoscience and nanotechnology in the country.

In Brazil, he developed a brilliant academic career at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, promoted the training of specialists in Latin America, and was awarded the National Order of Scientific Merit for his contributions to science.

From CEDENNA we express our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends, and we deeply appreciate his legacy and his valuable contribution to our scientific community.
